Set the smallest image gap and edge margin that your validated cutting, handling and printer workflow can use reliably. Keep those settings consistent when comparing nesting results.
IMAGE GAP
Design spacing protects the finishing step
The gap creates separation between printable silhouettes. Manual scissors, guillotine cutting and automated finishing can require different amounts of room.
Run a small production test before reducing a known-safe setting. A visually tight sheet that slows cutting or damages prints is not efficient.

EDGE MARGIN
Keep artwork inside the reliable printable area
Edge margin protects designs from roll edges, printer limitations and handling. It is separate from the gap between designs.
Measure the usable width of the production setup and enter that width consistently rather than compensating with random extra margin on every job.
- Use printable width, not nominal width
- Keep left and right edge behavior predictable
- Do not hide uncertain width inside oversized gaps
CONSISTENCY
Compare layouts with identical spacing
Changing the gap while comparing two nesting engines invalidates the test. Hold roll width, margin, gap, quantities and rotation settings constant.
Once a setting is validated, save it as part of the shop's production recipe so different operators quote and export jobs the same way.

Is edge margin the same as image gap?
No. Edge margin separates artwork from the film boundary; image gap separates one printable design from another.
