THE SHORT ANSWER
A DTF gang sheet is one continuous piece of direct-to-film transfer film, commonly 22 or 24 inches wide, on which multiple designs are arranged and printed together. Ganging spreads the fixed cost of the film, ink, powder and press time across every design on the sheet, so the price per transfer drops. The sheet's length, and therefore its cost, depends on how tightly the designs are packed.
WHERE THE WORD COMES FROM
Offset and screen printers have ganged jobs for decades: several small pieces imposed on one large press sheet, run once, trimmed apart. DTF borrowed the word and the reason. The film, the white ink underbase, the adhesive powder and the curing pass all cost the same whether the film carries one logo or forty.
A gang sheet is that habit applied to transfer film. The operator collects the designs that need printing, lays them out on a sheet, prints once, and cuts each transfer out before pressing or shipping.
HOW A SHEET IS SIZED
Width is fixed by the film roll and the printer's printable area. Desktop and mid-format DTF printers commonly run 12, 13, 22 or 24 inch film, and wider industrial units go past 30 inches. Fill My Film accepts any roll width from 1 to 72 inches so the sheet matches the machine in front of you.
Length is the variable. Vendors sell gang sheets in fixed length steps, but a shop printing on its own roll can stop the sheet at the last placed design. The tighter the layout, the shorter the sheet.
WHY THE LAYOUT DECIDES THE COST
Every square inch of the sheet is paid for whether or not ink lands on it. A layout that treats each design as a rectangle leaves the corners around a round or irregular design blank, and those blanks add up to inches of film across a full sheet.
On the verified sample job shown on this site, the same 15 pieces on a 22 inch roll took 31.5 inches of film packed as boxes and 25.13 inches packed by silhouette: 20% less film for identical prints.

No. A transfer is one design ready to press. A gang sheet is the film that carries many transfers before they are cut apart. Vendors often sell by the gang sheet and let you fill it with as many transfers as fit.
22 inches is the width most US transfer vendors sell and many mid-format printers use, with lengths sold in fixed steps. There is no single standard; the right width is whatever your printer or your supplier actually runs.
You need a way to place the designs at their real print size on a canvas the width of your film, and to export a file your RIP accepts. Design software works but is slow by hand.
